The future of regional transit in the Detroit still remains unclear, but if the latest proposal pitched by Wayne County Executive Warren Evans is any indication, we could be looking at a bus-heavy plan. The new idea for the RTA proposes more buses, more frequently, with added 24-hour routes.

Here within the city of Detroit, DDOT has gone from zero 24-hour bus routes in 2015, to six in 2016, to nine in 2017. They may add one more this spring.

What does this mean for residents who rely on the bus system? It certainly gives those who depend on it for work piece of mind. But it also increases access to many local restaurants, hospitals, schools, and sporting events. Local transit advocate David Gifford says, “The 24 hour routes in Detroit connect residents to the surrounding neighborhoods, restaurants, breweries, bars, theaters, stores, and sporting events. No need to drag your car from place to place, pay for parking, worry about parking tickets, getting towed, or paying for costly ride hailing services. Transit also provides the opportunity to integrate into the fabric of Detroit rather than driving through it.”
