Detroit Tigers fans take note: the former home of Hall of Famer Charlie Gehringer on the city’s west side has recently been listed for $72,000.

Gehringer lived in this handsome, stone-clad bungalow with his widowed mother, Theresa, for whom he purchased it the 1930s. Unfortunately there are no interior photos available, but we do know that this corner-lot home was built in 1927 and contains 2,400 square feet of living space, including three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. It also comes with a charming three-car garage with architectural accents that match the house.

A Detroit Free Press reporter who interviewed Gehringer’s mother in anticipation of Gehringer Day at Briggs Stadium in 1940 described the living room as decorated with trophies and other memorabilia: “On the coffee table an ash tray is decorated with a baseball and a bat. On the hearth is an orange sofa pillow adorned with a triumphant championship Tiger in black and all the signatures of the 1935 world championship team outlined in black stitching. A photograph of Charlie in Tiger uniform is on the mantel, with some trophy cups.”

Gehringer remained in this Grandmont neighborhood home with his mother through the final years of his active career. After the 1942 season, Gehringer left this home and enlisted with the U.S. Navy, serving for three years. Gehringer did not marry until 1949, the same year he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. His number was retired by the Detroit Tigers and a statue of him stands at Comerica Park.
