Welcome to The Floyd Shop

Right off the Dequindre Cut’s soon-to-open Freight Yard, near the famous shark mural, local businesses are opening new spaces in a formerly vacant building. First up is Floyd, the Detroit-based furniture brand, whose first-ever retail space is now open to the public. Curbed stopped by to take a look around their headquarters and the Floyd Shop.

The company started in 2014 in a garage in Corktown and then worked out of Ponyride. Known for the Floyd “leg,” the company aims to build furniture that doesn’t end up in a landfill and instead can be adaptable and last a lifetime. Since 2014, the company has launched three new products (bed frame, table, side table) and raised $5.6 million in Series A funding. Their business has always been online and this retail space is the first time customers can interact with the products.

The retail shop even has a timer set up so customers can time themselves assembling a table. There’s also a Floyd bed with a strategically-placed selfie mirror above it.

The building also houses the company’s 14 employees. Longer tables with outlets provide work space, with a couch and chairs for casual meetings, plus a kitchen, conference room, and research & development station.

Co-founers Kyle Hoff and Alex O’Dell say this space hadn’t been occupied for decades. In the past, it housed some kind of spiral ham-cutting operation. M1/DTW did the design of the space; MiG Construction handled the build-out. The space next door will soon be home to Anthology Coffee, with a patio out front for guests. Both buildings have clear garage doors facing the street. The Floyd space will also be used for events and talks throughout the year.

O’Dell says that Floyd has been inspired by the furniture-making history in Michigan, and how the region has built long-lasting companies. They’re excited about the Eastern Market space, and what the next generation of furniture will look like in the region.

The retail space doesn’t carry inventory, but purchases are shipped immediately. The Floyd Shop is now open at 1948 Division, Tuesday-Friday from 11-5 and Saturdays from 10-3. Here’s a look around.
